A gaited mule is any mule that has a smooth gait other then a walk, and one which is distinct from a trot.  Some gaits are listed in the box below.

Mule Gaits

  1. Single-foot
  2. Fox-trot
  3. Rack
  4. Running Walk
  5. Stepping Pace
  6. Paso Fino
  7. Other smooth gaits, whatever you call them!
Whatever the gait may be called, its primary virtue is smoothness.  The gaited mule (or horse, for that matter) can be ridden farther without discomfort from the bouncing one experiences at a trot, and at a more manageable pace than a canter.  A gaited mule is great for trail riding, for obvious reasons.

Many gaited mules are born from Tennessee Walking Horse, Saddlebred, or Racking mares, but some are out of Quarter Horses.  For this reason, there is no requirement that the parents of a gaited mule be gaited.
